APPA's Core Areas
Educational facilities professionals develop and sustain the physical environment of the institutions that they serve. In support of this work, APPA provides information, training, and research based on four core areas of competency.
- General Administration & Management - business and financial services, human resources and training, information and communications, organizational structure, strategy and leadership, and more.
- Operations & Maintenance - custodial, daily and preventive maintenance, grounds, deferred capital renewal, condition assessments, building systems, emergency preparedness, and more.
- Energy, Utilities & Environmental Stewardship - utility systems master planning, heating and cooling systems, electrical distribution, campus sustainability, alternative energy supply, fire protection systems, data and voice infrastructure, and more.
- Planning, Design & Construction - campus infrastructure, campus master planning and space planning, design standards, construction planning and management, project management, real estate, building information modeling, and more.
Resources
Several APPA resources are specially built around or inform the four core areas.
The Body of Knowledge (BOK) is an online compendium of current knowledge and practice about educational facilities management.
The APPA Institute for Facilities Management, offered twice yearly, is a foundational training program that uses the four core areas as a framework and is supported by the Body of Knowledge.
The Center for Facilities Research (CFaR) advances the body of knowledge of facilities management through research, discovery, and innovation.
APPA's Credentialing and Certification Programs are based on knowledge of APPA's four core competency areas for facilities professionals. The Educational Facilities Professional credential (EFP) and the Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) programs establish a standard for professional practice in the field of educational facilities management.
The APPA Glossary contains a comprehensive list of definitions of terms and acronyms used in the educational facilities industry.
