CFaR
RESEARCH TYPES
The Center for Facilities Research is designed to encourage participation among a broad spectrum of people with an interest in education regardless of formal research experience. Research within CFaR is defined broadly under two main types:
INFORMATION COLLECTION
- INQUIRY: Simply posting a question about an aspect of educational facilities using APPA’s electronic discussion lists. All inquiries and responses are archived on the APPA website. Join the APPAinfo list or see archived queries.
- SHARING: Case studies and success stories shared through publication in Facilities Manager magazine, on the website, at an APPA conference or seminar, or through another APPA medium. Read recent examples or search the library.
CFaR PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH
This type of research involves the integration, critical examination, or cross-analysis of existing research to bring a new perspective to the body of knowledge for facilities professionals. In this type of research activity, existing data and information will be reevaluated. The objective of this type of research is to “mine (re-use) or combine existing, robust data” in order to produce a new perspective or information that can be used by facilities professionals. This activity may include literature reviews, consensus research, meta-analyses, and database analyses.
CFaR peer reviewed research is also original research that is conceived, conducted, and interpreted specifically for the industry and for CFaR. In this type of research activity, original scientific investigations will be conducted to generate new information. This research requires a hypothesis query that should result in adding to the Body of Knowledge (BOK) for the facilities professional. Typically, surveys are conducted, data is gathered, and an approved level of analysis must be provided. This activity focuses on theoretical and empirical studies that are reported through peer-review processes, and presented at national and international conferences. Ultimately, this research results in a dissertation-like report of findings.
Guidance and oversight for every CFaR research project will come from APPA’s Research Specialist with technical assistance provided by CFaR’s Assistant Directors. All research will be peer reviewed and the results of the peer review process will be shared with the Principal Investigator. Final results will be shared through various APPA communication media and captured and archived on the APPA website.
