Cleanliness and Learning in Higher Education

Based around the five levels of clean identified in APPA’s Custodial Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities, this national study of nearly 1500 college students determined there is a correlation between the cleanliness of a school’s facilities and students’ academic achievement. The moderators of this session were the researchers on the project conducted through APPA’s Center for Facilities Research (CFaR) and co-sponsored by ISSA.

How “Green” Is Your Thumb? A Study of Sustainable Grounds Maintenance Practices
Moderators: BYU Students
APPA is engaging young facilities professionals in applied research. Undergraduate students in facilities management from Brigham Young University conducted this research project through APPA’s Center for Facilities Research (CFaR) to discover the best practices for grounds maintenance at higher education and other educational campuses that can be used in conjunction with the LEED-EB program, resulting in a best practices checklist. This checklist offers grounds managers direction to develop a management plan that will enable them to receive LEED credits for sustainable sites. In addition, this study presents a brief overview of “green” practices, accompanied by applicable examples and case studies.

Study Shows School Cleanliness Affects Learning

A recent national study of college students determined there is a correlation between the cleanliness of a school’s facilities and students’ academic achievement. Entitled Cleanliness and Learning in Higher Education, the study was based around the five levels of clean identified in APPA’s Custodial Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities. More information.
