APPA's Body of Knowledge (BOK)
A body of knowledge is the collected wisdom, experience, processes, and facts that both inform a profession and provide the solid foundation from which continuous improvements and innovative change can occur. Since 1914, APPA has made countless contributions to the educational facilities management profession through its training programs, publications, and research projects. Competency, collaboration, and credibility for the facilities professional are the desired outcomes of these efforts.
APPA’s Body of Knowledge (the BOK) updates and builds upon the contents of Facilities Management: A Manual for Plant Administration — APPA’s major reference book published in three editions since 1984—and makes them available in a searchable digital database. Editor-in-chief Maggie Kinnaman is overseeing dozens of writers, editors, and peer reviewers as they revise, update, and enhance the APPA body of knowledge. The project is ongoing, and updated sections will be posted as soon as they are peer reviewed and approved.
The Body of Knowledge is built on the foundation of the four core competency areas identified by APPA:
- General Administration and Management
- Operations and Maintenance
- Energy, Utilities, and Environmental Stewardship
- Planning, Design, and Construction
The digital BOK (pronounced B-O-K, not Bock) will assist you in your search for professional guidance, best practices, and policies and procedures as you support the mission and vision of the educational institution you represent. The BOK also serves as the foundational text for APPA's Institute for Facilities Management, as well as the body of knowledge you need to know as you pursue APPA’s Educational Facilities Professional (EFP) certificate and the Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) credential.

All users will be notified of any new chapters or updates made to the BOK.The BOK Editorial Board and Peer Reviewers
Many people have contributed their time and energy to APPA's Body of Knowledge, including chapter authors, editors, and peer reviewers.
