Policy To Address Attendance Issues
Kansas State University created a new policy to address attendance issues in June 1996. Before this occurred, frequent complaints came from supervisors who were struggling to complete their work. Even louder complaints came from employees who were on crews with others who were unreliable and frequently absent, often without prior scheduling. They were having to carry the load and were tired of it.
When this policy came out, we provided copies to all employees and did training sessions with the supervisors to discuss terminology and application of the new rules. We answered questions from employees about how this policy would affect them. We began coaching and counseling as early as possible with "at risk" employees to be very sure they were aware of the rules and the implications of failure to comply with these rules.
Within a year we found that supervisor and employee complaints dropped dramatically. We found that most of the serious leave abusers were terminated or chose to seek employment elsewhere.
At this point, we keep an eye on leave usage and are very pro-active with employees who show any problem signals in this area. We meet with them, provide information and referrals (if needed) to help them. We let them know how important they are to the organization and our operation. Most employees are able to correct their leave problems and frequently improve home situations as a result of this effort. Supervisors have become much more in tune to taking timely corrective steps, whereas they at one time saw "turning a blind eye" as a favor to the employee.
Overall, this has been a great success and benefit to our employees, the supervisors and managers and most of all the University. The policy can be found at the following site:
