Critical Issues and Influences
APPA developed the Thought Leaders Series to promote dedicated discussions on the future of higher education and the impact of that future on educational facilities. The annual Thought Leaders Symposium convenes representatives of colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada alongside association leaders and industry consultants.
To help its members with their campus sustainability initiatives, APPA added to its Thought Leaders Series through the development and publication of a Sustainability Guide, The Educational Facilities Professional's Practical Guide to Reducing the Campus Carbon Footprint. There is no charge for downloading this document; sponsored by Affiliated Engineers, Inc.
Essential Questions for the Facilities Professional
APPA's Facilities Performance Indicators (FPI) report empowers the educational facilities professional with the vital data, statistical references, and reporting tools needed to measure operations and performance, identify capital asset realities, and lead a successful facilities strategy that supports the institution’s Mission and Vision. APPA shaped the FPI survey and report to assist facilities professionals to easily and clearly describe and share answers to these essential questions with their campus decision makers:
1. What facilities make up our institution?
2. Is my institution adequately funding the facilities management annual budget?
3. Are the operating funds that my facilities department receives being spent in a manner that supports desired outcomes?
4. Is my institution making the right investment in our existing buildings, infrastructure, and academic programs?
5. Are the customers satisfied with the space and service?
6. Am I building a staff that can sustain excellence?
Networks
The MAPPA Trainers Network pursues education, information, research, standards development, and other activities applicable to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the facilities required for quality teaching, research, and public service. In addition to their website and e-mail discussion list, the MAPPA Trainers Network also hosts the yearly Big Ten + Friends Trainers Conference. You do not have to be a member of the Midwest region to join the network or participate in their activities.
APPAinfo is an active e-mail discussion list for educational facilities professionals. Discussion topics range from everyday operations, maintenance, and human resource issues to high-level queries about facilities investment strategies.
