National Electric Code
View APPA's report on the Status of the 2008 National Electric Code by Michael A. Anthony, P.E., of the University of Michigan.  Anthony serves as APPAs representative to NEC Panel 1, which governs code administration and general requirements.  For additional background information on APPA and the National Electric Code, read APPAs Influence on the 2008 National Electric Code, which first appeared in the July/August 2006 issue of Facilities Manager magazine.

The 2005 National Electric Code Technical Committee Meeting was held January 12-18, 2003.  To review the full text from this meeting, click here.

NAED University Alliance
The National Association of Electrical Distributors is pleased that East Carolina University and Eastern Michigan University have joined NAED as affiliate members.  The university alliance affiliate membership allows universities and their students the opportunity to join at a special rate and gain access to NAED's unique learning and networking opportunities.

Energy Planning and Management Articles
The January/February 2007 issue of Facilities Manager  focused attention towards Energy and Utilities issues with three feature articles:

Stategic Energy Planning: A Step Zero Approach addresses tactics for avoiding unexpected capital expenditures through strategic energy planning, including incorporating sustainability intiatives, and mitigating cost and availability fluctuations.

In Critical Power Sytems: The Generator in Your Backyard, Michael A. Anthony unravels the particulars of critical operations power systems (COPS), campus power security, and the implications of the 2008 National Electric Code.

Curbing utility costs has become a high priority for all institutions. While consideration of new forms of energy production such as wind power and solar collection is increasing, nothing can reduce energy costs faster then conservation. Goshen College, has developed a good program of conservation through the combined use of technology, education, building facility upgrades, and the cooperation of faculty, staff, and students.  Read more about Goshen's successful conservation efforts in:  Small Campus Reaps Results Through Energy Management.

As part of a series of articles on energy issues from SchoolFacilities.com, Energy Management - A Necessity not a Luxury in the 21st Century, defines exactly what is meant by "energy management," and the key elements that must be developed before an energy management plan can be developed and implemented on campus.

Have you seen the Campus CHP Case Studies?
IDEA has posted a number of Case Studies on our web site featuring some of the leading campus energy systems in the country and we are sharing them with you.  Visit the map and click on a highlighted state to view.
