Why FPI Survey?

The FPI Survey Cycle for 2008-09 is now closed. APPA sincerely appreciates the efforts by member and non-member institutions alike for your continued support and participation in this great benchmarking tool. The participation rate for this cycle was enormous and our numbers have increased over 75% from the previous year. THANK YOU!!!!

Please check back in late March when we will debut the 2009-10 FPI Survey. We will open the survey much earlier this year to allow everyone an opportunity to participate again and start planning their data collection and input strategies.

Everyone may continue to view their 2008-09 FPI Survey data between now and the end of March by logging in to your MyAPPA account page and selecting the link under MyResearch that will then direct you to the survey link. Please email Christina Hills for any questions related to the FPI Survey or Report.

Over 450 learning institutions are now realizing the benefits of APPA’s FPI performance measurement services. FPI empowers the educational facilities professional with the vital data, statistical references, and reporting tools needed to measure operations and performance, identify capital asset realities, and lead a successful facilities strategy that supports the institution’s Mission and Vision.

APPA FPI Provides Answers to the Following Questions, and More:

  • How well is your facilities portfolio in alignment with your institution’s strategic direction and academic focus?
  • What is your facilities inventory, square footage, and building ownership costs?
  • How efficiently do your facilities operate?
  • How does your campus facility performance contrast with its peer institutions?
  • Is my campus adequately funding the facilities management annual budget?
  • Are the operating funds that my facilities department receives spent in a manner that supports desired outcomes?
  • Is my institution making the right investment in its existing buildings, infrastructure and academic programs?
  • Are our campus customers satisfied with the space and services?
  • Is the institution’s facilities department developing a staff that can sustain excellence?

How effective is the FPI?

“The FPI has always been an effective means for one to mark areas of needed attention and/or to identify those aspects that are going well by looking at one’s own data year to year and by comparing to benchmark institutions. In today’s difficult times the ability to make these comparisons is even more critical. This instrument can become the common vocabulary between facilities professionals and financial professionals that conveys the strength of the effort and the areas of need in an objective consistent fashion. At Valparaiso University we use the FPI and other companion pieces to maintain a consistent quality form of communication with our administration and our board of directors. At our institution, in these difficult times the FPI was acknowledged as documentation that reductions in the facilities area would have predictable outcomes, and as a result no operational reductions have been made to date.”

Fred Plant, Executive Director of Physical Plant, Valparaiso University

“The FPI provides us with the tools to gauge our facility’s operations comparatively to many differing groups. While observing these comparisons, the FPI also exhibits our trends from year to year, highlighting areas where we need improvement. But most importantly, incorporating the FPI into our daily informational tracking aids in our continual assessment of operations throughout the year.”

J.B. Messer, Director of Facilities Management, Oklahoma City Community College
