Institutional Evaluation
The effect of enhanced facilities has been shown to impact the retention and recruitment of students.  But do you know how your facilities program measures up?  As the old saying goes, “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.”  APPA’s Facilities Management Evaluation Program (FMEP) provides institutions with a customized evaluation conducted by a team of institutional peers across a comprehensive set of criteria, resulting in a report consisting of personalized feedback and recommendations designed to help transform participating facilities into those worthy of international recognition.

For a detailed explanation of the FMEP process and the criteria used in the evaluation process, contact Holly Judd at 703-684-1446 ext. 234 or holly@appa.org.

Facilities Performance Indicators
APPA’s Facilities Performance Indicators (FPI) Survey is an annual collection and reporting of data creating a baseline for performance evaluation across educational facilities. The FPI Survey and resulting FPI Reports take a comprehensive look at facilities’ operating costs, staffing levels and expenses, building and space costs and usage, strategic financial measures, and much more to provide a benchmark by which related institutions can compare, contrast, measure, and elevate their facilities’ performance. But you have to play to win: only those participating in the survey get access to the entire FPI databank, including identification of all participating schools for comparative purposes.  The Web-based reports include numerous dashboard indicators, a peer comparison feature, and a searchable database.

For more information or assistance with the FPI survey and report, contact Christina Hills at 703-684-1446 ext. 244 or christina@appa.org.

Operational Guidelines for Educational Facilities
APPA sets the standard for staffing and operational guidelines for educational facilities practices. APPA’s guidelines have been widely used by facilities professionals and have been recognized by other associations as the source for staffing levels. Read about the plan to update and revise the guidelines trilogy.

  • Custodial Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities
APPA’s popular guide to custodial staffing expands on the original concepts of the five levels of clean and includes information on such specialized facilities areas as dormitories, healthcare facilities, and more. 33 room categories in all.
  • Operational Guidelines for Grounds Management
A comprehensive guide to maintaining and managing your grounds and landscaping operation. Chapters discuss environmental stewardship, broadcast & zone maintenance, grounds staffing guidelines, contracted services, position descriptions, benchmarking, and environmental issues & laws. Seven appendices list software for grounds management, sample position descriptions, extensive glossary, directory of grounds magazines, and list of professional organizations, cooperative extension service specialists, and bibliography for further reading.
  • Maintenance Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities
Contents discuss the maintenance of buildings; definitions and assumptions; stewardship versus service; maintenance versus construction/renovation/alteration; levels of maintenance; trades descriptions; zero-based staffing buildup; and much more.

All of the Staffing Guidelines titles above, including book/software packages, are available through the APPA Bookstore.
