APPA 2018: Annual Conference and Exhibition

APPA 2018 is the platform for discussion, information share, networking, and much more! Join educational colleagues for this distinctive international event where we discover best practices used around the world from more than 100 presenters, to include the professions most recognized and talented educational facilities leaders representing facilities officers, directors and managers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the world! August 3-5, 2018 in Washington, DC, we will convene, identify and discuss the most current and pressing challenges facing educational facilities, and determine the common path forward.

General Information

At APPA 2018, you will have the opportunity to purchase the latest APPA publications as well as other books that enhance your knowledge and professional development. Check back as we prepare to release new APPA titles to add to your personal facilities library!

As a reminder special discounts are available for conference attendees, with an extra 10% to all first-time attendees.

The APPA Ambassador Scholarship program awards scholarships to facilities professionals based on demonstrated financial need and an expressed interest in pursuing professional development. The scholarship criteria is as follows: The facilities professionals eligible for assistance must be employed at an APPA institution, have been in the field of educational facilities for a minimum of 5 years, in a supervisor level or higher with decision making authority, and have never attended APPA’s annual conference . Applicants must submit a scholarship application on the form provided by APPA. Applicants must receive an approval signature from their supervisor prior to submitting final paperwork to APPA. Each scholarship awarded will be made in the amount of $1,795.

APPA 2018 gives you the opportunity to earn continuing education units (CEUs). Transcripts will be available approximately four weeks after the conclusion of the meeting. APPA will also be working with AIA on credits for specific programs and will release updates on this ability in the coming months.

APPA will refund the full cost of your registration if you cancel by May 1, 2018. Your request for cancellation must be made in writing to us at education@appa.org. Should you cancel your registration from May 2nd to May 31st, APPA will refund your registration fees minus 45% of the amount previously paid. Any request for cancellation received after May 31st will result in a complete forfeiture of fees previously paid.

APPA is pleased to announce that we will partner with Bread for the City for the 2018 Annual Meeting's service project, a diaper drive. Final details on how you can get involved will be released by April 1st. APPA 2018 Headliner Speaker:


Vice Admiral (Retired) William Hunter Hilarides

Raised in Chicago, Vice Adm. William Hilarides graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He holds a master’s degree in engineering management from the Catholic University of America, and is a certified Acquisition Professional in the US Defense Acquisition System.

Hilarides deployed for almost 20 years on four nuclear powered submarines of four different designs, USS PARGO (SSN 650), USS GURNARD (SSN 662), USS MARYLAND (SSBN 738), and USS KEY WEST (SSN 722).  He commanded KEY WEST from May 1998 to November 2000.

His shore assignments during his operational career included duty on the staff of the Commander of US Submarine Forces, the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Chief of Naval Operations. 

VADM Hilarides entered the Acquisition Professional community in 2002, achieving qualification as a certified Program Manager.  Assignments included Director of Advanced Submarine Research and Development, Program Manager of the SSGN Submarine Conversion Program, Program Executive Officer for Submarines, and Commander of the Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA).  As NAVSEA, he oversaw a global workforce of almost 70,000 military and civilian personnel responsible for the development, delivery and maintenance of the Navy’s ships, submarines and warfare systems. 

While on active duty, he served for several years on the board of Navy Federal Credit Union.

Hilarides received various personal and campaign awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Intelligence Distinguished Service medal.  He retired in 2016 after 35 years of service.

Since retiring, his consulting company clients include several Defense manufacturing companies, several Intelligence and Cyber concerns, a major Private Equity concern and several Energy sector companies including an advanced commercial nuclear reactor start-up.  He serves on the Australian Naval Shipbuilding Advisory board, the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital quality board, and speaks publicly on organizational resilience based on his experience during the Navy Yard shooting in 2013.

 


Christina Gruber

 

Raised in New Jersey, Christina moved to Las Vegas in 1997. Christina holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a focus on Accounting and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 2004.

When Christina is not working, she is a mom of two children, Cierra (14) and Jake (7). Christina also trains for triathlons in her free time and is set to race in her first half Ironman distance this October in Tempe, AZ. Finally, Christina enjoys volunteering to help serve those less fortunate in her community.

Christina will be speaking about her experiences during the October 1 Mass Shooting in Las Vegas at the Route 91 Music Festival. She suffered injuries in both legs with having twenty pieces of shrapnel lodged into them. Because of her injuries, she was unable to train for a couple of months. However, she is back at it and has already participated in four triathlons this season.




Lance Allred

.Born with 80% hearing loss within a polygamist commune before he escaped at age 13, Lance Allred is the first deaf player in NBA History when he played with the Cleveland Cavaliers. A best-selling author and TEDx star of "What is Your Polygamy?" Lance speaks on Leadership, Perseverance and Grit, and will empower your audience to step beyond their comfort zones and be leaders of their own lives.
