SFO: Transformational Changes in Higher Education and Facilities Management
SPEAKER: Don Guckert, University of Iowa, Lander Medlin, APPA Executive Director

Higher education and the facilities management profession are finding themselves increasingly immersed in a sea of transformational change. In an era that has been termed the “Age of Accelerations,” impactful forces are affecting institutions and correspondingly are changing the facilities profession in dramatic ways as it relates to finances, technology, demographics and communications. The presenters will share a view of the not-so-distance future and discuss with attendees how to best position themselves to embrace the changes that are bearing down on us. This presentation is intended to stimulate thinking and discussion about how higher education and our professional needs to be preparing for a rapidly changing environment.

SFO: APPA’s Total Cost of Ownership Update: Putting TCO to Work on Your Campus
Speaker: Ana Theimer, APPA TCO Work Group Co-Chair, The University of Texas, Austin

APPA is leading the facilities community on a path to Total Cost of Ownership -- a transparent, holistic, and efficient approach to building asset management and resource allocation. As an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer, APPA released the first of its two “TCO Standards" (APPA 1000-1) in January of this year, defining Total Cost of Ownership and the underlying principles of TCO. APPA is now well underway with the development of its second TCO standard (APPA 1000-2), which will identify a pathway for facility managers and owners to implement TCO practices. Implementing the APPA TCO standards will allow educational institutions to properly track, monitor and evaluate campus buildings and their systems. TCO implementation ensures smart building management and efficient maintenance and replacement of energy, utility and safety systems; continual maintenance of the building exterior and interior and materials; updates to design and functionality; and more. This session will explore the TCO standards – both principles and the upcoming TCO implementation standards. Discover how educational facilities can put the APPA standards to predict needs, deliver data driven results, and most effectively manage their building portfolio.

10:20 AM - 12:00 PM
SFO: Campus People and Partnerships
SPEAKER: Dan Bollman, Michigan State University

Are you looking for ways to prove or enhance your value to your university? Come see how Michigan State's “People and Partnerships” initiative is demonstrating to the University how the facilities organization can aide in research and enhance student success. After the presentation, join with your fellow SFOs to see how your campus might be able to adopt this program to your university. We all know how vital the facilities organization is to the campus mission, so why not start a program that will demonstrate our value to our fellow faculty, students, and staff.

SFO: APPA Thought Leaders 2018: Enterprise Risk Management
SPEAKER: Keith Woodward, Quinnipiac University

Many of your colleagues attended this years Thought Leaders program in Orlando, Florida to better understand how the facilities organization is or should be woven into the lager campus Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program. Come learn why ERM is more than just a discussion about insurance. We are all attuned to the risk associated with natural disasters, active shooters, or utilities and infrastructure failures. But have you considered “Reputational” risk in your risk management scenarios? Are there “Sacred Cows” on your campus that feel immune to or think the rules don't apply to them? Come learn and discuss how the facilities organization can better support your ERM program. Or you could just ignore the need for ERM and suffer the consequences!

SFO: Facilities and “The Cloud”
Speaker: Mike O'Connor, Sovereign Professional Solutions, LLC

“The Cloud” is becoming ever more ubiquitous to our lives. How many of you struggle to keep on top of the ever-changing storage services (Box, Drop Box, Google Drive, One Drive, etc)? As soon as you have one system figured out, three newer faster, cheaper, better services launch and have you thinking and dreading trying to migrate your data to a new solution. But the cloud is much bigger than storage. It encompasses the Internet of Things (IoT), mesh networks, enterprise computing, analytics, and a host of off site solutions including: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Planform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), and Mobile “backend” as a Service (MBaaS). Come learn and share your thoughts on how can “The Cloud” can reduce cost and improve the efficiency of your facilities organization.
