Explore the context of management skills within the model facilities department. Examine the different styles of management and visualize yourself in the roles of mentor, coach, and team builder. Learn the skills necessary for these roles and develop an understanding of how to best leverage your assets as management skills.

104 Managing Staff Relationships
Participate in discussions of methods of developing positive employee relations, in union and non-union environments. Explore effective management processes addressing cultural diversity and sexual harassment issues. Develop a good understanding of the basics principles of human resources management. Topics include recruiting and selecting employees, promotion and advancement, employee evaluation, and grievance procedures.

105 Information Technology for Dummies
This course will introduce the various kinds of information technology systems that are designed as a return on investment to the user. This overview should provide to the normal facilities employee a better understanding of the kinds of information systems that are available. The objectives of an information system is to serve various aspects and needs of the institution. Does the information system serve the need of the facilities department? Does the information system support the vision and mission of the institution? Is the information system aligned with the results needed? We will discuss where the problems are with other peer institutions and more importantly where is system migration headed and would you recognize it when it comes. Where is technology taking the industry? Is the industry aligned with the Higher Education Facilities Profession?

106 Communication Skills for Managers
This course enables participants to use their knowledge of basic influencing skills to improve their communication based on a new understanding of their personality type. Using information from The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, each participant will learn techniques to improve their communication with co-workers and their supervisor. Each participant will develop a plan for improving their working relationship with their immediate supervisor. The course also involves interaction with other participants to facilitate management of work groups, leading meetings, communicating with groups, and working with delivery of both good and bad news.

107 Managing the Other Resource: Information
This course will review what you need to know to be an effective manager of facilities. There is so much data and information available to managers of facilities. The more successful l managers have figured out what they really need to know to be successful. The course designed to review what is needed by leaders to be ahead of the curve. Part of the discussion will be about the additional data that is needed to use APPA's Strategic Assessment Model - SAM.

109 Developing an Engaged Workforce
Scan the evolution of leadership theory to assess your role in your organization toward generating an empowered workforce. Understand and apply the concept of empowerment and theories of motivation as a strategy. Foster consistent standards, appraise for performance, implement recognition, and delegate for effectiveness. Explore ways to create a motivating environment by enhancing employee self-esteem as you provide leadership within an appreciative model.

Examine ethical issues facing facilities professionals. You will learn a framework of foundational principles and questions to use as a guide in the decision-making process, and strategies for improving the ethical climate of an organization.
