Dear Potential TCO software developer,
Facility and infrastructure asset owners are the primary beneficiaries of a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) approach. Historically significant focus has been on first costs, primarily because designers and contractors are contracted to identify how much it costs to initially provide the asset and not its long term impact. While the first cost is important, it does not provide the owner with the big picture information they need to make long term sustainable decisions for their organizations. With sustainability in the news and a broader life-cycle view of assets now becoming more the norm, APPA has taken the bold move to develop a standard for TCO. Not just for educational institutions but for the entire built environment. Part 1 – Principles of this ANSI recognized standard was released late in 2018, and now we are on schedule to release Part 2 – Implementation and Data Elements prior to the end of 2019.
To that end we want to provide you some details about the APPA TCO standards effort and the opportunities it may provide your company. You, as software developers are key to its ultimate success, because few are able to implement a new strategy by simply reading a standard. The concepts need to be embedded in software tools which are provided to owners and practitioners to more easily implement the TCO strategy.
We have scheduled a webinar on Tuesday June 11, 2019 at 2pm EDT to provide an introduction to our efforts. The Webinar will cover the following subjects:
- Why TCO and Why Now?
- Awareness of TCO Strategy
- Potential Customer Base
- Data Set Scope
- TCO Data Elements
- Project Data
It should be noted that no software should be released until the standard itself is released, as changes could occur up to the release date later this year. However, it is also recognized that there is a lead time required to make internal decisions and generate and test code that would support the standard. We feel that this introduction will help you begin making those internal decisions and start the development process.
