APPA Recognizes Five Universities with APPA 2012 Sustainability Award

July 20, 2012, Alexandria VA APPA announced that the University of British Columbia, the University of California – Irvine, Emory University, American University, and the University of Prince Edward Island are its first-year recipients of the APPA Sustainability Award.

“We are excited to introduce the APPA Sustainability Award in this year’s annual awards program,” said David Cain, APPA’s Vice President, Professional Affairs, and the chair of the Awards and Recognition Committee.  “Great strides have been made within educational facilities to achieve campus environmental and sustainability goals, and this new category allows us to recognize these important advancements.”

The focus of the APPA Sustainability Award is to measure the current level and effort of a facilities management department with regard to sustainability, and its integration with the academic curriculum of the institution. Nominations were assessed on areas of educational curriculum and research; leadership and administration; maintenance and operations; energy and utilities; planning and construction; sustainability indicators; and sustainability innovations.

The awards criteria developed in collaboration with and support from the research and development work provided by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Their Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) program offers benchmarks by which educational institutions may measure themselves for recognition of their campus environmental and sustainability achievements.

The awards were presented by APPA 2011-12 President David Gray of Middle Tennessee State University, on Thursday, July 19, during APPA’s Awards Banquet at the APPA 2012 Annual Conference and Exposition in Denver.

APPA promotes leadership in educational facilities for professionals seeking to build their careers, transform their institutions, and elevate the value and recognition of facilities in education.
