Find Your Purpose … Live Your Purpose
Genevieve Piturro is all about Purpose and The Human Connection. She was a successful television marketing executive until she dramatically changed the direction of her life. She found her true purpose when a sudden inner voice challenged her life as she knew it. In 2001, she founded the hugely successful national non-profit, Pajama Program, when a six-year-old girl’s question changed her life forever and she jumped off the corporate ladder. This year, the Program celebrates its 21st anniversary, having delivered more than 7 MILLION magical gifts of new pajamas and new books to children through their 63 chapters across the U.S. Genevieve is now a professional speaker and purpose consultant who understands how vital purpose and the human connection is to a team and the bottom line. She created the Purpose ACER business training program to help leaders create a shared culture by aligning the goals of the company and management with the goals of its employees.

Creating a Healthy Learning Environment
This will be a case study into understanding how the COVID-19 Pandemic raised the awareness of how important a building’s “health” really is. The presentation will show the collaborative effort indicating how a health & wellness assessment helped raised the owner’s perspectives and created a better learning environment. It will go through the entire process: audit assessment, findings, decisions made, and implementation of corrections requiring measurement and verification.
Presenter: Al LaPera, LEED AP CxA EMP, Board Member, Energy Management Association

APPA’s Operational Guidelines Trilogy New Editions
APPA’s new trilogy of Operational Guidelines for Educational Facilities – Grounds, Maintenance (recently published), and Custodial (due this year) – are powerful in content and provide the tools needed to set service level standards and determine staffing levels. In addition, each guideline provides a how-to approach for best management practices within their topic areas, especially related to the attributes that build sustainable performance delivery. This presentation will give a concise overview of the guidelines.
Presenters: J. Thomas Becker, PE, MBA, CEFP, APPA Fellow, Editor in Chief APPA Guidelines Trilogy, JTB Consultants, Thomas Jefferson University (Retired Emeritus); Theodore J. Weidner, Ph.D., PE, RA, NCARB, DBIA, F.ASCE, Professor of Engineering Practice, Purdue University

Agile Technology Planning: Embracing Change
The greatest challenge to effective strategic technology planning is changing. How does an organization plan for technology that doesn’t exist or hasn’t yet developed into a proven use case? The best technology recommendations are grounded in today’s reality while extending the organization’s vision with research-informed science fiction. This program explores a seven-step framework to create an achievable technology implementation plan through a responsible, dynamic, and iterative process.

Dealing in Grays: Navigating our Next Chapters
We are anxious to ‘Get Back to Normal’ when we knew what our Campus expected; & we had the tools, resources, and staff to handle it. In effect when the answers were Black and White. Unfortunately, that World is gone. The Next Chapter will be entirely a World of Grays – requiring different approaches, talents, answers & even different questions with no easy Blacks/Whites. In fact, going forward there will be only choices in Gray. In this session, we’ll give tools for navigating & dealing with those Grays.
Presenter: Dave Irvin, APPA International Board Chair & Associate VP for Facilities, Florida State University

A Practical Solution to Maintain Healthy Spaces
As schools seek to maintain healthy spaces for learning, Aramark partnered with PlanLED to improve IAQ for building environments. Using ultraviolet light to disinfect the air is a proven solution recommended by the CDC as a ‘layered strategy’ to improve IAQ. Three Rivers School District deployed Upper Room GUV in classrooms and cafeterias to create a sustainable and affordable environment for health. Their solution serves as a model for districts that seek to ‘future-proof’ their operations.
Presenters: Brian Lee, Vice President, Engineering Solutions, Aramark; Scott Jenkins, Executive Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, PlanLED; David Valenzuela, Superintendent, Three Rivers School District

Solving the Facilities Project Closeout Puzzle
While construction and renovation are ongoing at facility campuses, facilities teams are ultimately responsible for building and equipment maintenance and safety. Too often, campus facilities teams must do their work without closeout packages from contractors. Lacking these critical building details could result in guesswork about shut-off locations and other important info and put the facility at risk. The goal of this discussion is to present solutions to these closeout challenges.

AI-Based Dynamic Building Controls: Clemson University Case Study/Best Practices
To reduce Watt and other buildings’ campus energy usage, we have developed AI occupancy predictions to optimize building automation. Our goal is to reduce the energy demand for all buildings on campus by using occupancy forecasting. To gather raw data we use wireless access points or (WAPs). With the prevalence of smartphones, the number of distinct users connected to the WiFi in a building is counted through algorithms. This helped reduce between 8-17% of energy in 2 pilot campus buildings.

How Smart Technology Can Help Secure Our Schools
Unfortunately, active shooter incidents continue to happen and are on the rise. According to the Washington Post, there were more school shootings in 2021 than in any year since 1999. In a situation where seconds matter most, having a unified, smart approach to your institution’s security strategy helps mitigate risk and saves lives. Learn how a unified approach and the latest smart technologies, such as gunshot detection, can help your school be prepared and create a safe learning environment.
