Culture as a Competitive Advantage
Along with her responsibilities as CHO (Chief Happiness Officer), Jenn Lim travels around the world to deliver a message of passion, purpose, culture, and happiness. Jenn has been a consultant with Zappos from its start-up days in 2003 to the $2B business it is today. She created the Zappos Culture Book, an embodiment of how companies can use happiness as a business model to increase productivity and profitability. Jenn’s experience with Zappos, combined with her development of scientific frameworks for workplace happiness, created evidence that happier employees = happier customers = successful companies (and meaningful lives). What’s more, she discovered that every organization can have similar results. Today, Jenn is dedicated to growing DH (delivering happiness) to inspire happiness in people, companies, and communities so that together, we can create a happier world.

Preparing for Renovation, Remodel, or Additions   
When preparing for major changes, facility managers are often looking at questions of space utilization, infrastructure fatigue, energy and sustainability enhancements, new technologies, budget, and finance, as well as code and ADA compliance. The major change comes with master planning/design challenges that should be informed by building condition assessments.  If you are considering remodeling, renovation, additions, or major system changes, the design must start with understanding facility conditions.

The FDMP: Better Decisions, Better Facilities
FM requires numerous decisions regarding the physical assets of any business or enterprise. There is a lack of a uniform decision-making framework for facilities that enables consistency, robustness, and scalability. The Facility Decision-Making Process (FDMP) is a proven framework based on several case studies. This presentation will explain what the FDMP is as well as to conduct a lead-through example of its effective use in an urban facility planning context for a photovoltaic array project.

Sustainable Cleaning in Educational Facilities
As a society, we have been operating for far too long on the myth that toxic cleaning products are the only solution for killing viruses, bacteria, pathogens, and fungi. In fact, these chemicals can result in bacterial resistance and superbugs, and worse, can cause respiratory issues, cancer, and a host of health problems for staff, faculty, and students. Hypochlorous acid is a non-toxic and sustainable solution, offering a safer and eco-friendly alternative for cleaning and disinfecting in schools.

A Framework For Delivering Productive, Smart Buildings
In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic started, facilities managers and APPA members took proactive and innovative approaches to ensure campus operational continuity. Many adjustments were made to the built environment that bolstered confidence in students, staff, researchers, faculty, administrators, etc. to occupy their campus buildings. Yet a key question remained without a clear, data-based answer, “is it safe to be in my building?”. These facilities managers lacked a comprehensive, quantifiable tool to measure the built environment and how it impacts the productivity of humans occupying these spaces. Products and services available in the market were cost-prohibitive, especially as the budgets get tighter for APPA member institutions. In response, the APPA Board of Directors made the bold decision to develop a new framework – Productive, Smart Buildings that looks to answer this question for our campus communities. This tool was designed to be available to all APPA members as a part of their membership. It would serve as a self-assessment tool allowing the facilities managers to measure their built environment for optimal human productivity while working to understand the readiness of smart building technologies for continuous monitoring of occupied spaces. This presentation will share the task force’s progress on the development effort, results & insights from a pilot test, and the next steps leading up to the release to APPA members.

This course discusses the different behavior and work patterns we have observed over our 30+ years of designing for education spaces and offers proven solutions for addressing those patterns.   The limbic system in our brains plays a strong role in the idiosyncratic and repetitive behavior patterns we see displayed in different educational environments.  To maximize the effectiveness of learning spaces and achieve the desired function, we must design with these behavioral patterns in mind.

Ventilation Study and Improvements Project: 2022 APPA Effective & Innovative Award – The Julliard School
The ventilation study and improvements project along with the ongoing monitoring program is an effort
to ensure that the Juilliard community not only has a comfortable environment for them to do their work but also maintains the safety recommendations published to protect against the spread of COVID19. This was achieved by a study conducted by in-house engineers that identified key improvement needs of the systems. In all, 182 rooms over 42,799 square feet received improvements. The average ACH of those requiring attention rooms improved from 1.60 to 10.45. Most of the rooms were improved by the completion of basic maintenance activities. Through the implementation of the associated monitoring program, the system improvements implemented will be effectively maintained as well as new needs identified. As a result, the community can breathe easier knowing ventilation systems meet the requirements to protect against COVID-19 while also providing a more comfortable and energy-efficient environment. The data revealed in this program was also instrumental in our successful request for additional resources in the engineering shop to support our efforts to stay on top of these needs and avoid allowing them to slip back into disrepair.
