Reflecting on APPA Membership

April 17, 2025

As a family of professionals, we connect with each other to collaborate and stay informed in a rapidly evolving landscape. With change seeming to be the only constant, it is increasingly important for institutions to operate efficiently, update best practices, and implement innovative, flexible solutions. The APPA Spring Conference offered a crucial opportunity for facilities professionals to meet on neutral ground and break bread. It reminded me that, here at APPA, we all participate in the process—we all improve together.

To put it bluntly, the APPA Spring Conference was a heck of a success. We covered current industry concerns such as deferred maintenance backlogs, energy management, technological integration, and workforce development. We learned from those who had already tackled these issues, helping organizations avoid costly trial-and-error approaches. In a time when budgets are stretched thin, this kind of insight is invaluable.

A tour through time, members wandered Tulane University’s historic campus halls, learning from present-day technological solutions and exploring future endeavors. A tangible example of many topics mirrored in the breakout sessions—from long-term maintenance planning to the integration of smart technologies, attendees saw firsthand how a premier campus has effectively balanced historic preservation with forward-thinking innovation. Seeing best practices in action at Tulane translated conference theory into real-world application and sparked ideas that attendees could take back to their own campuses.

Every day is a new adventure here at APPA. Our member organizations, business partners, and individuals alike are constantly looking for ways to stand apart and make an impact. Whether that is through community events, strategic initiatives, progressive thinking, or new ways to provide value to our members, APPA is taking aim squarely at being the resource your organization can lean on when facing turbulent headwinds.

Although it may be tempting to scale back on professional development during periods of financial strain, doing so poses risks to long-term success. APPA membership and participation in educational opportunities like local conferences, CEFP studies, and FEMP reviews are high-value investments in people, knowledge, and community. For facilities professionals and their institutions, New Orleans wasn’t just about attending an event—it was about building resilience, driving efficiency, and leading with confidence into the future.

Change may be the only constant, but by leveraging our community’s collective strength, we are dedicated to meeting these challenges head-on.
