APPA Webinar – Historic Slate Roofing: Repair or Replacement?

From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, slate was the most common roofing system in the northeastern United States. A typical slate roof system will begin to fail as it reaches 100 years in age, but slate roofs have been known to last up to 200 years with proper maintenance. As the cost to replace slate roofs is high, and historic preservation guidelines typically encourage repairs before replacement, it is critical to understand when repairs should be performed, how repairs should be performed, and when a roof is beyond repairing.
