Celebrating 45 Years of DOE’s Weatherization Program

On Thursday, October 28^th, from 11:00-1:30 p.m. ET, the National Association for State Community Services Programs (NASCSP) will host a virtual event to commemorate the 45th anniversary of DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program.

At the event, we will hear from members of Congress, U.S. Department of Energy officials, state and local weatherization professionals, and weatherization training centers who will provide demonstrations, client success stories, and more. The Weatherization Assistance Program has supported Americans by delivering cost-effective energy savings, providing important health and safety benefits, helping to protect the environment, and supporting domestic jobs for 45 years.

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income families, seniors, individuals with disabilities, families with children, and households with high-energy burdens improve the energy efficiency of their homes. To date, more than 7.4 million low-income residences have been weatherized, reducing energy bills by $250–$450 annually. Weatherization services also play an important role in improving the health and safety of low-income families. Residents of weatherized units report fewer colds, headaches, hospitalizations, doctor’s visits, and absences from school or work. When factoring in energy efficiency and health and safety benefits, every dollar invested in the WAP returns $4.10 for our most vulnerable citizens.
