From the very beginning, APPA has cultivated a community of collaboration, integrity, and service—a network of professionals dedicated to shaping learning environments that empower students, educators, and institutions.
From Humble Origins…to Global Leadership
Founded in Chicago in 1914 by representatives of 14 Midwestern higher education institutions, APPA began as the Association of Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds of Universities and Colleges.
Over the decades, as the educational landscape expanded, so too did APPA’s vision. What started as a small group of facility stewards has grown into a global community of professionals representing higher education, K–12, museums, libraries, and other educational and cultural institutions.
