Major Steven D. GASSER, CD, MEDes, P.Eng. (Ret’d)
I retired from the University of Calgary on 01 June 2021 as Associate Vice President, Facilities Management. I had been with the University of Calgary since 2008. I was responsible for the caretaking, operations & maintenance, energy & utilities, quality assurance, and integrated work management systems.
I started at Royal Roads Military College in August 1974 and graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil). In 1992, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a master’s degree in environmental design, majoring in Urban and Regional Planning.
From 1979 – 1998, I served as an officer in the Canadian Military Engineers and was posted to a variety of positions in both combat and construction engineering across Canada and overseas, as well as a tactics instructor with the CF School of Military Engineering. I served as a peacekeeper with the United Nations Force in Cyprus and with the NATO Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. I received the Maritime Commander’s commendation for my conspicuous energy as applied to my duties and the local Canadian Military Engineer Community. I retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1998.
From 1998 - 2004 I was the Director of Environmental Services with the Town of Banff, AB where I oversaw the planning, engineering, transportation, environmental, and operations functions. From 2004 – 2008 I served as Assistant Deputy Minister Public Works with the Government of Yukon in Whitehorse, where I was responsible for all real property and facilities management throughout the territory.
I am a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Rotary International, APEGA, the Royal Alberta United Services Institute, and APPA.
I live in Calgary, AB with my wife Susanne Barva, and I have a daughter, Cassandra who lives in the Halifax, NS area. I enjoy skiing, hiking, fishing, camping, movies, reading, and traveling.
