CEFP FAQs

How long do I have to complete the prep course?

You will have 90 days of access to the self-paced prep learning course once you register.

Do I need to be an APPA membership to take the exam?

No, the CEFP Exam is open to both members and non-members. Members, however, receive significantly discounted pricing.

How do I know if I qualify?

Download the Qualification Spreadsheet to confirm you meet the requirement of 8 years of combined education and professional experience.

Why do I need to qualify for the CEFP course?

The CEFP curriculum is designed for professionals with significant experience in educational facilities. The exam includes case studies that require you to draw upon real-world expertise in planning, design, construction, operations, utilities, sustainability, and management. Candidates with less experience may find it difficult to successfully complete the prep course and exam.

Can I review the Body of Knowledge (BOK) before I begin?

Yes. You may access the BOK in your APPA Member Compass area. However, we strongly recommend using the credentialing version of the BOK provided within the CEFP prep course, as that is the version used to develop the exam.

Is the study course only offered online?

Yes. The CEFP prep course is delivered through APPA’s LMS platform in Member Compass. You’ll find all study resources in one place: study manual, flashcards, review sessions, practice exams, and more.

How long do I have access to the course?

Access to the prep course is available for 90 days beginning the day you register.

When can I take the exam?

The CEFP exam is available on-demand, giving you the flexibility to schedule when you’re ready during your 90-day access period.

What happens if I cannot complete the course on time?

If you’re unable to complete the course within your 90-day window, please contact us to discuss your options.

What if I don’t pass the exam?

All candidates can request the Free Second Chance to retake the exam. If you need another attempt beyond that, additional exams may be purchased for $150, which includes 30 days of renewed access to the learning platform.

Is the exam fee included in the registration?

Yes. The exam fee is included in your CEFP Prep Course and Exam registration.

How do I renew my CEFP once I’ve earned it?

The CEFP credential must be renewed every four years. Renewal is based on a point system that recognizes professional development, training, leadership, teaching, and publications. Activities offered by APPA (such as webinars, APPA U, and regional events) will automatically be recorded in your recertification account. For outside activities, you’ll need to upload documentation for approval.
