Global Dialogue, Shared Pressures: Reflections from AUDE 2026

Association Updates,

AUDE 2026 brought together Directors of Estates from universities across the United Kingdom, creating a focused forum for discussing the evolving challenges shaping educational facilities.

APPA’s participation enabled engagement with institutional leaders, alongside representatives connected to HEFMA (Southern Africa) and TEFMA (Australasia), adding a valuable global dimension to the dialogue.

Shared pressures

Across discussions, a consistent set of pressures emerged.

  • Workforce constraints
  • Increasing demands on infrastructure
  • Tightening financial and budgetary conditions
  • The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence

At the same time, the sustainability of public funding for higher education continues to shape long-term planning and investment.

As APPA President & CEO Lalit Agarwal often notes, “the concrete cracks the same no matter where you are in the world.” While institutions operate within different systems and funding environments, many of the core challenges facing facilities professionals remain fundamentally aligned.Exchange of ideas

One of the most valuable aspects of AUDE 2026 was the exchange of ideas. Insights from HEFMA and TEFMA representatives introduced alternative perspectives, highlighting how innovation often emerges through adapting approaches across different contexts.

A shifting profession

The dialogue also underscored a broader shift in the profession. Facilities leaders are increasingly balancing operational execution with strategic foresight—aligning infrastructure decisions with financial realities, technological change, and evolving expectations of higher education.

Why collaboration matters

Engagement between organizations such as AUDE, HEFMA, TEFMA, and APPA reinforces the importance of sustained collaboration. The challenges are complex and interconnected, and progress depends on continued dialogue and shared learning.

Looking ahead

AUDE 2026 demonstrated that while institutional contexts may differ, the opportunity to lead, innovate, and adapt is strengthened through global connection. APPA will continue to build on these insights by deepening international partnerships, advancing shared learning, and supporting members as they navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected future.
